Skin Decision: 200 word review

When I was younger, I was obsessed with Dr Schulman, a male plastic surgeon who posts his surgeries on Snapchat. I’m not squeamish, so I really enjoyed watching the process of body transformation, including going under the knife. So, when Netflix’s Skin Decision: Before and After dropped, I was excited.

Skin Decision follows plastic surgeon Dr Sheila Nazarian and skin expert Nurse Jamie combine their expertise to assist clients in becoming their true selves. It’s thrilling to see their surgery theatres full of women, and women being advised by expert women on the best course of action for their body. It made me realise that watching Schulman meant I only ever watched women’s bodies filtered – and literally changed – according to the male gaze.

I was uncertain which stance this show would take, and expected it to reinforce beauty stereotypes. I was pleasantly surprised to be met with something empowering. Women and men are assisted in regaining confidence, reducing scars, perfecting their skin. Surgery can’t always fix these things, and Dr Nazarian and Nurse Jamie take a holistic approach, considering diet, fitness and non-surgical approaches before considering the knife.

It’s insightful and heartwarming – just don’t watch if you’re scared of needles!
